Arrival in Sevastopil

Posted on June 4, 2007

We left Odessa yesterday and arrived in Sevastopil this afternoon. We had an eventful day sailing on the Black Sea preparing for our first orphanage. We all learned a new song written by Sheila Uselton. The song “Please Remember” is a great simple song that we are going to use to sing to the orphans right as we leave. It was translated into Ukrainian and we are practicing it often. The very last lines of the song is “God loves you”. This is an awesome message to leave with the children, a message of hope and of love.

This evening we spent time with a HopeHouse family and had some wonderful worship time. We got to hear their stories, and then they sang us songs. Kevin Wood borrowed their guitar and Olivia Brunson and Emily Wood joined him in leading us in a worship song that was very moving. The family thanked us for taking the time out of our lives to do this work.

God has continued to bless us in unexpected ways. We found additional duffles that will help provide more supplies to the 2 additional orphanages on our trip that we didn’t plan on.

Tomorrow morning will be our first orphanage. Please pray for the children that we will see tomorrow and that their hearts will be open to the message that we bring, God’s love and his amazing grace and mercy! Thanks for all of your prayers, we are feeling it!

    Hi Nancy,

I am so very proud of you for having the faith to answer God’s call on your heart. The kids and I miss you terribly of course but we all know that you are taking part in the service of God’s Kingdom and that in doing so we are still connected though far apart in miles. I look forward to hearing your experiences as to how God works through you and all the others who answered His call to serve. Be aware though, by taking this leap of personal faith, you have made yourself open to being called upon again in the future. You will be, and I know from personal experience that once you have felt the pull of your heart, that you will desire more than anything to continue to answer. What a blessing to be in the service of the Almighty God who hears our prayers and answers us each according to our needs. When I was lost and in need, God provided you. Through you, I found my way back to Him. You have always been a blessing in my life and I am so happy for you that you will now, in the company of so many others, be a blessing for our brothers and sisters in the Ukraine. It is placed on my heart to share the following passage because you are following in the footsteps of those who came before, “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying ‘whom shall I send? Who shall go for us?’ And Isaiah answered, ‘here am I Lord send me’” (Isaiah 6:8). The situation may be different but the committment to His service is no less important. God called and you answered. May God Bless You all and God Speed.

    Hi Amy (“Sweetie”) Webb,
Missing you a great deal. It is amazingly quiet here in Wisconsin, given that I don’t know anybody. I watched Titanic the other night (sorry, I know you are on a boat). It made me wish that we were watching it together. (Sorry for the sappiness to anybody else reading this). Anyway, I am so proud of you for going to Ukraine to do this. You are an inspiration to your husband and your entire family. Don’t feel like you need to call me or anything. I know it is expensive. But I look forward to talking to you in a week or so.

I keep praying that the children will know that the LORD loves them deeply so that each of them will have HOPE!!! I also pray that none of the teenagers will have to be prostitutes or drug dealers because Ukranian christians will reach out to them when they are sent out and mentor them and help them get work skills.

I am also praying that the LORD will help each of you overcome the sadness as you leave the children. What a hard thing that is to do. May the God of all grace sustain you and the children.

    Hi Jamey, Abby and Sheila,
Update on David…. Possible 6 hr surgery, ended up being 12hrs. Surgery went well, but when closing up the dr. noticed bleeding. While trying to stop the bleeding, found out that he had a tear in his aorta. Was put back on the heart/lung machine to replace that part of the aorta. What took so long, was they had to lower his body temp. Due to his size, it took a long time to warm him back up. He will be on a venilator for days. He’s not out of the woods, yet. We have not heard anything this morning. Keep him in your prayers.

Hope you are all having a great time,

    Nancy,
You are my “American Idol” !!! Just when I think you have given all you can for other people, you give more. I am in awe of your unselfishness and sacrifices in the name of the Lord. You are an inspiration to me and have taught me that in this crazy and hectic world, there is always time to share ones self for the good of those less fortunate.
    Love you,
    Susan

    Hi Nancy,
What a wonderful thing you are doing by giving the gift of yourself and your time in HIS name. It sounds very emotional but just know how you are touching these childrens lives. Something they will never forget and most likely will make an inspiring difference in their lives. God bless you and the family forever.
    Love, Aunt Teri

Deneen wanted me to pass along to all of you that you have been in her thoughts and prayers this week. While she has been at the hospital most of this week with her dad, she has been reading your daily blog reports. She is unable to respond from her Blackberry. She is so proud of all that you are doing and thanks you for what you are doing. Thanks to Rhonda for leading the group. It is obvious from reading your daily reports that the Lord is with you and His hand is on you as you minister to the orphans each day. Pastor Rick – Deneen says she can’t believe that she is not there with you in Ukraine (inside joke).

You have been in Teresa’s and my prayers this week and we will continue to pray for the rest of your mission trip. Please tell Yuri and Ira hello for us. Please continue to pray for Deneen, her mom and their family this week as they minister to Brian as his condition deteriorates.

    TAYLER AND KELLEY!
i hope you both are loving you trip and we all miss you so very much!
i just got back from Florda yesterday and had an awsome time.
i have been praying for you both all week, for i hope God will reveal himself in mysterious ways, as he has done for me this past week at camp.
just to fill You in on what you’ve missed, which won’t be much from me, because i have missed alot from being gone as well, but erin broke her wrist last night.
yes taylor, i know, but she WILL be able to stunt at cheerleading camp. she can’t tumble, but the doctor has given her an ok for stunting.
her, tayler, and kenna were all at kennas house last night, and like normal, they were dancing around.lol
erin just fell on the couch to sit down and kenna fell right back on her wrist, and it broke
she is ok, of course, but just thought you two might want to know.
In Romans 12:12 it says: Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer.
that verse has come to my mind as i have prayed for you this week, and i hope God will use all your spiritual gifts to glorify his name.
May you all reflect the Lord to whom ever you come across in your final days there.
WE love you SOOO MUCH and miss you MORE THAN ANYTHING!
    can’t wait to see you,
    Lauren Van Dam

  80. Ukraine’s Orphans It is a crisis. But there’s hope.
    • Ukraine’s Orphans receives 35% of any orders placed at http://www.olgaorzhakhovsky.myarobnne.com during the summer (June, July, and August).
    • Just visit the site, http://www.olgaorzhakhovsy.myarbonne.com and shop online.
    • When you are finished ordering, sign the guestbook and mention Orphans in Ukraine.
Arbonne premium skin care products are formulated in Switzerland at the Arbonne Institute of Research and Development (AIRD) and made in the U.S.A.
    ARBONNE proprietary formulas are:
    • Botanically-based: A proprietary blending of science and nature based on herbal and botanical principles.
    • PH correct: Skin care pH of 5.5 insures maximum benefit.
    • Hypoallergenic: Voluntary human testing meets Hypoallergenic substantiation claim criteria.
    • Dermatologist tested: Voluntary human tests done under the watchful eye of an independent Dermatologist.
    • Never tested on animals: Voluntary substantiation and safety testing is performed at independent laboratories on human panels.
    • Formulated without animal products or by-products:
Imagine being a child living in an orphanage. Abandoned by your parents. Receiving inadequate nutrition. Few or no medicines to relieve your suffering when you are sick. No one who is dedicated just to you – to tell you how special you are, to help you learn to walk and talk and encourage you as you study and grow. Even if the caretakers at your orphanage are caring and loving, there are just too many children and too little money to change the situation.
Your future doesn’t look too bright. When you are 16, you will have to leave the orphanage. You don’t have family to turn to. There are few jobs in your country. There are few programs to feed you or house you. And your self esteem is very low for all you’ve been through.
Right now, there are over 100,000 children living in orphanages in Ukraine. Official numbers vary, and it is difficult to pinpoint the exact number. Reports from 100,000 to 150,000 exist, with 120,000 being the most commonly cited number. There are officially another 100,000 in state care, such as semi-orphanages and other forms of care.
Whatever the final number, the reality for these children is bleak. Because the Ukrainian government provides extremely inadequate funds for clothing, shoes or other basics, and the budget for food is grossly inadequate as well, many children suffer from poor nutrition, medical issues that result from this like rickets, hunger, cold and lack of medicines. Orphanages depend on international aid for survival. This is why I am raising money for UKRAINES ORPHANS!

Would you like to set up a FUNDRAISER for HOPE HOUSE INTERNATIONAL?

Our Mission

HopeHouse International exists so that Orphans in Ukraine can become adopted by Christian couples within their country. Adequate housing is a barrier for most citizens, and it is a government prerequisite for adoption. HopeHouse International enables adoptions by addressing adequate housing needs which result in three or more children being given a family and a future.
